At a luxury Sprinter handover, it is easy to spend the appointment trying the seats and looking at the lighting. Give equal time to the things you will need to operate in a dark campground or explain to a service advisor by phone.
Ask for a parked demonstration of the systems fitted to your particular van. A feature on another model, or even another vehicle with the same model name, may work differently.
Collect the documents before the demonstration
Make a folder containing the VIN, coach serial number, final build sheet, purchase documents, warranty contacts and manuals. Record the model numbers of the house batteries, inverter or charger, rear air conditioner, water heater and other installed equipment. Save downloadable manuals on your phone so you can read them without reception.
Use the Mercedes-Benz manual for the correct model year for the chassis. Ask the builder for the coach instructions and any equipment-specific supplements. The Mercedes book alone will not explain a custom rear control panel.
Have each power source demonstrated separately
With the vehicle safely parked, ask the person delivering it to show which systems work with the engine off, on the house batteries and on shore power if fitted. Watch the battery monitor during each demonstration. Learn where to read state of charge, active charging sources and any error messages.
Ask them to identify the shore inlet, approved cord, input limit, main controls and owner-accessible breakers. Record the normal startup and shutdown sequence in your own words. Then operate it yourself while they watch. Do not settle for “everything is automatic” if you do not know how to recognize a fault.
Try the cabin in travel mode and parked mode
Sit in each designated travel seat, adjust the restraint and confirm how any swivel or sliding mechanism locks for travel. Ask which positions are approved for occupants while moving. A sofa, lounge or bed is not automatically a travel seat.
Open and latch the cabinets. Stow tables, displays, footrests and loose accessories as instructed. Walk through converting the seating to its parked configuration and back again. Test the rear controls from the position where a passenger will use them, not only from the main panel.
If there is plumbing, trace the whole system
Have the builder identify the fresh-water fill, pump, drain points, waste equipment and water-heater model. Ask how to tell fresh fill from any other water connection, where permitted waste disposal occurs, and which supplies the system requires.
Request the winterization procedure even if you are taking delivery in July. Ask whether any tanks or lines are outside the heated cabin and what protection they need in freezing weather. Write the van’s travel dimensions down
Request the finished height, width and overall length, including fitted equipment. Ask about the effect of a bike rack or storage box you intend to add. Locate the vehicle’s weight-rating labels and discuss how to obtain a loaded scale weight before traveling with a full passenger group and luggage.
Confirm the supplied tire-pressure guidance and where it is recorded. Do not infer allowable passenger or cargo weight from how much empty cabinet space remains.
Leave with a short, agreed punch list
Photograph any issue, describe the expected correction and get the person responsible and follow-up date in writing. Separate cosmetic items from anything that affects safe travel or basic operation. Do not plan a remote first night while an essential system remains unexplained or unresolved.
For the first outing, choose a nearby destination with an easy return route. Use the van normally, keep a list of questions and contact the dealer while the handover is still fresh. One uneventful night close to home is valuable preparation for a longer trip.
