Northern Michigan makes a useful first longer trip for a luxury Sprinter owner: choose a base near Sleeping Bear Dunes, spend time around the lakeshore, then add a separate Traverse City day. You can test the van’s everyday routines without changing accommodation every morning.
For 2026, one familiar camping option needs to come off the list. Michigan DNR states that Keith J. Charters Traverse City State Park’s campground is closed through the 2026 season, while its day-use area remains open. That status was checked September 8, 2026. Recheck the park page before planning a later visit.
Investigate Platte River for a Sleeping Bear base
The NPS page for Platte River Campground lists a mix of campsite types, including electric sites and tent or walk-in options. Select a site that explicitly suits your van; the availability of electric service somewhere in the campground does not mean every site has it.
Use the park’s reservation link to inspect the individual pad, vehicle-length allowance, access and amenities. Check the seasonal availability of the facilities you need. If the van has no onboard toilet or shower, the location and operating status of shared facilities become part of the booking decision.
Keep the first arrival day deliberately light
Arrive with time to inspect the site, park in daylight and test the equipment you intend to use that evening. Locate the electrical connection before backing in, then follow the builder’s hookup procedure. Keep cables and hoses out of pedestrian and vehicle paths.
Once settled, make a list of anything you forgot or do not understand. A local shop run is easier before you are committed to a full day of sightseeing. Use the first night to learn how the refrigerator, lights and charging behave with your normal belongings and passengers aboard.
Give the lakeshore a day of its own
Choose a small number of stops in the Sleeping Bear area, using the park’s trip-planning pages and current alerts. Check the suitability of each approach and parking area before committing a long van to it.
Pack the things you will use outside where you can reach them through an appropriate door without unloading the cabin. Keep wet footwear and sandy equipment contained for the return drive. Leave enough daylight to get back and reset the van without rushing.
Plan Traverse City as a parking decision
A downtown meal or shopping stop needs a suitable place for the van, not necessarily a campsite nearby. Confirm an outdoor lot that permits its length and height, and save the correct entrance. If using a hotel, ask the property directly about oversized parking and whether that arrangement can be reserved.

Adjust the trip to the equipment you own
A hotel-based visit may be the better choice for an executive van without a bathroom. A camper-equipped conversion may work well at an appropriate campground. Neither choice requires pretending the van has features it does not have.
For camping, book power if your cooling or other essential equipment needs it. In cooler weather, confirm the heating and plumbing limitations with the builder; a scenic autumn date does not guarantee nights will stay above freezing.
Before departure, recheck the campground reservation, park alerts and service availability. Keep one flexible day in the itinerary. It gives you room for weather, a second lakeshore visit or simply a slower morning in a van you are still getting to know.
