A Wi-Fi network name on your phone only proves that the van’s router is broadcasting. It does not prove that the router has an internet connection. For a useful mobile office, trace the connection from the outside network to the device on your table.
Most owners will consider cellular service, satellite service or both. The right combination depends on where you stop and what must work when you get there.
Separate the router from its internet source
Ask the installer to draw a simple list: cellular modem and carrier, satellite terminal if fitted, router, antennas and power supply. Record which subscriptions are active and who owns the accounts. Equipment installed in a used van may still be tied to the previous owner.
Learn which status screen shows an outside connection and which only shows local Wi-Fi. Save the approved restart procedure. Randomly power-cycling every component makes an intermittent problem harder to identify.
Test cellular service with the work you need to do
Start with the places where you regularly travel. Use a carrier’s coverage map to shortlist service, then test it at actual stopping points. A fast download outside the campground does not establish a stable connection in a wooded site.
Make a normal video call, send a representative file and connect the number of passenger devices you expect to use. Repeat during a busy period if possible. For work calls, steady upload performance and low interruption matter more than one impressive download result.
If you add a second provider, check that it uses a different underlying network. Two subscriptions with different retail names do not necessarily provide independent coverage. Ask how the router switches connections and whether an active call may drop during that change.
Choose satellite parking with the sky in mind
Satellite service can provide another route to the internet where cellular coverage is poor, but the terminal needs a suitable view. Trees that make a campsite pleasantly shaded can interrupt the connection. Use the equipment maker’s obstruction check at the intended setup location.
Before buying or mounting equipment, read Starlink’s current in-motion guidance and the requirements for your exact hardware, mount, service plan and location. Do not assume a portable terminal can be attached to the roof and operated while driving. Have a permanent installation designed and secured for vehicle use.
A roof installation also changes the measurements on your parking clearance card. Keep that record current before visiting garages or covered entrances.
Budget for power and data
Ask the installer how the connectivity equipment is powered when the engine is off. Include the router, satellite terminal and laptop charging in the house-power budget. A device that runs all night can matter even if its instantaneous draw looks small.
Check the subscription’s data allowance, restrictions, priority treatment and renewal terms directly with the provider. Video streaming from several passenger devices can consume the plan you intended to reserve for work. Set download and update preferences before the trip.
Build a fallback before the important call
For a meeting that cannot move, plan a verified stopping place and arrive early enough to test it. Keep essential documents available offline and retain a phone-based connection where coverage permits. Do not discover the van’s satellite obstruction pattern five minutes before the call.
Use a strong Wi-Fi password, change default administrator credentials and keep router software maintained according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Give guests a separate network if the equipment supports it.
A comfortable desk and a large screen help once the connection works. Test the entire setup as a working system before depending on it for a full day away from home.
