For a Sprinter trip to Zion, check the finished van’s dimensions before choosing the approach road. The roof unit, mirrors and rear carrier matter as much as the chassis. A route that worked for someone else’s van may be unsuitable for yours.
Checked September 8, 2026: Zion’s current large-vehicle guidance applies size and weight limits to the Zion–Mt. Carmel Highway between Canyon Junction and the East Entrance. This is a restriction on the highway segment, not simply a tunnel appointment.
Check all four limits, including width
The National Park Service’s current single-vehicle limits are 35 feet 9 inches long, 7 feet 10 inches wide, 11 feet 4 inches high and 50,000 pounds. NPS says measurements include mirrors, tires and attachments such as rooftop air conditioning and bicycle racks. A vehicle exceeding any limit cannot use the affected segment. Combinations with trailers have separate length conditions.
Do not judge eligibility by the “Sprinter” badge. Measure the complete traveling configuration and compare it with the current park guidance. If a measurement is close or unclear, contact the park before choosing that approach. Do not rely on an older article describing payment for an oversized tunnel escort.
Plan a South Entrance visit if the highway does not work
NPS identifies South Entrance access as an option for oversized RVs visiting permitted parking or camping areas, subject to conditions and availability. That does not authorize continuing beyond Canyon Junction onto the restricted highway.
As a planning approach, choose your overnight base first and map both arrival and departure without assuming an east–west trip through the park. Tell navigation which roads the van cannot use. Recheck the complete route when changing destinations; a fresh route calculation can put the restricted segment back in.
Keep parking and the day’s transport together
Decide where the van will remain while you visit the canyon. Confirm the selected lot can accommodate its length and that the approach avoids an unsuitable entrance. Have a second plan in case the first lot is full; a planned space is not a guaranteed space unless the operator explicitly reserves it.
Read the park’s shuttle information for your visit dates before planning the day around driving to trailheads. Save the service details and maps offline. At a busy destination, knowing where you will leave the vehicle is more useful than adding another stop to the itinerary.
Match the overnight stay to the van
An executive conversion with a refrigerator and reclining seats may be ideal for reaching a hotel but may not have the equipment needed for your preferred campground stay. Confirm the actual sleeping arrangement, sanitation facilities and electrical requirements before reserving.
If you intend to camp, inspect the individual site listing and ask the operator about eligibility for your conversion. If you intend to use a hotel, request an outdoor parking route and confirmation of the space. Our campground guide and hotel parking guide cover the questions to ask.
Leave time for the onward route
A Zion stop is often part of a longer trip. Check the route to your next destination independently instead of assuming the road you entered on makes the onward journey simple. Save a suitable fuel stop, an alternate overnight destination and the park’s current road information.
Read Zion’s current conditions again shortly before arrival. Access rules, weather and road status deserve a final check even when the accommodation has been booked for months. Build the trip around a van that fits the route, with time to stop and enjoy the park once the driving is done.
