Cabin systems

A campground reservation that includes electricity does not tell you which appliances your Sprinter can run together. Before your first hookup, learn what the finished van accepts, how its charger behaves and what the cabin display is actually reporting. A short demonstration at handover is easier than troubleshooting beside a campsite pedestal after dark.
Start with the finished van’s equipment
Ask for the conversion’s electrical manual, the inlet rating and the model numbers of its charger or inverter/charger. The Mercedes-Benz chassis manual does not describe every appliance an upfitter installs. Photograph the equipment labels and keep the instructions available offline. If the van is used, ask whether later battery or appliance changes were documented.
Shore power can supply cabin equipment and recharge the house batteries, but those functions depend on the installation. Victron’s shore-power overview distinguishes a charger from an inverter/charger with transfer switching. That is useful background, not evidence that your Sprinter has those components. Have the seller identify what is actually fitted and show its normal operating state.
Confirm the connection before booking
Give the campground the requirements recorded for your van and ask which service is available at the reserved site. Do not choose an outlet from its appearance alone. Voltage, connector type, circuit capacity and the van’s approved connection equipment must agree. A booking description such as “electric site” is not a complete specification.
Ask the upfitter to identify the correct shore cord, any permitted adapter and the protection equipment required for that installation. An adapter does not create additional available power. Avoid making your first trip the occasion to improvise a connection with household extension cords. Damaged plugs, loose receptacles, signs of overheating or wet equipment call for assistance from campground staff or a qualified technician.
Record where the inlet is and how the cord will reach it without crossing a walking route. Compare that with the site’s parking orientation. This small detail can save a second parking attempt, particularly when the hookup sits at the opposite end of a narrow space. Our campsite booking guide covers the other measurements worth checking.
Learn the power budget with a real demonstration
Ask the seller to demonstrate the van connected to a suitable supply, then explain which outlets and appliances are powered. Use a written list: air conditioning, cooking equipment, water heating, refrigerator, entertainment and battery charging. Mark anything that requires a particular source or cannot operate alongside another large load. The useful answer is a combination you can use, not simply a list of installed appliances.
Some inverter/chargers allow an input-current limit. Victron describes this as a way to match demand to the available supply; some models can also supplement that supply from the batteries. Have a qualified person show which controls the owner should use on this specific system. Do not alter installer settings or assume another owner’s numbers apply.
Keep a quick-reference card with the approved settings and appliance combinations. For example, the instruction might be to pause one load before starting another; the actual combination must come from your equipment demonstration. If a breaker trips repeatedly, stop and have the cause checked. Repeated resets are not a substitute for resolving an overload or fault.
Read the display before assuming the batteries are charging
During the demonstration, ask someone to point out the indication for an accepted shore connection, charging status and battery state. Take your own photographs of the normal screens. A cabin light being on does not, by itself, prove that the external supply is working; it may be running from the house battery.
Compare the display with major appliances off and then with an approved load operating. Ask what happens if campground power fails and which equipment continues from the batteries. Write down who to call if the display shows a fault. This is separate from estimating overnight cooling time, covered in our battery-powered air-conditioning guide.
Practice arrival and departure once
Follow the connection and disconnection sequence in the manuals supplied with your equipment, including the specified breaker and appliance positions. Ask for a supervised practice session before taking the van home. Locate the cord storage compartment and confirm that the cable can be put away without kinks, dirt or moisture trapped against sensitive equipment.
Finally, add the shore cord to your departure walk-around. Disconnect and stow it according to the instructions, close the inlet cover and check the surrounding area before moving. A reliable routine makes campground electricity useful without turning every arrival into an electrical lesson.
